Responsibilities
WPB&A is looking for a talented professional with an entrepreneurial mindset to join our construction phase team. The candidate will enjoy working on multiple projects in varying capacities, both on project jobsites and in the office, with limited oversight while gaining valuable real-world experience. This position is full time year-round and will receive on the job mentoring within the first year of employment. More specific details are described below.
Civil Engineer
Core Responsibilities
Taking ownership of and effectively managing assigned projects; meeting budget and delivery timeframes; ensuring client satisfaction.
Ensuring that assignments are executed with technical proficiency, accuracy, and professionalism.
Reviewing and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
Monitoring construction work and directing contractors on project sites.
Acting in an owner representative role, and/or in an at-risk construction management role.
Conducting constructability reviews.
Monitoring and assessing construction performance and/or activities to ensure compliance with construction documents and applicable codes.
Preparing detailed reports auditing construction projects and/or documents.
Assisting in project schedule creation, management and analysis.
Reviewing and interpreting project specifications and building codes.
Assisting with quantity takeoffs and cost estimating.
Preparing file setup and filing.
Making employee safety a priority both in-house and on project sites, in accordance with corporate policy.
Representing WPB&A in a professional manner.
Managing inspection staff
Position Requirements
Able to manage multiple projects concurrently.
Able to manage staff up to 6 people.
Able to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with co-workers, project staff, clients, and contractors.
Travel and/or field work as required.
Able to work with minimal oversight, but take direction effectively from management.
Able to conform to deadlines, both internally and externally driven.
Other project duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Licensure
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management.
P.E. license preferred.
Work Experience
Minimum 3-6 years of site and/or transportation design or related construction activities in an engineering role.
Working experience with interpreting construction drawings, specifications, contracts, estimating and take-offs, and as-built drawings.
Experience on State DOT or Federal Highway projects a plus.
Comfortable working in a consultant setting, assuming ownership of projects and performing work with minimal oversight. Tracking your time and monitor activities against a budget.
Knowledge & Skills
Ability to perform complex task and handle multiple priorities.
Have the ability to perform in high stress conditions.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Work in an efficient, well-organized manner.
Requires excellent technology and computer skills.
Estimating skills are a plus.
Proficiency or working knowledge of Microsoft Office software is required.
Proficiency or working knowledge of Adobe software a plus.
Proficiency or working knowledge of CAD a plus.
Certifications
NETTCP HMA certification preferred, but not required.
ACI Concrete certification preferred, but not required.
OSHA-10 or -30 certification preferred, but not required.
Physical Requirements
Walk job sites during inspections, sometimes on uneven terrain.
Carry construction tools and equipment (up to 30 pounds) onto job sites.
Travel and/or field work locally to Cumberland/Portland, Maine area will be required – may include nights and weekends.
Valid Driver License and reliable transportation.
Travel outside region as required on a limited basis.
